What Are Knots — and Why Do They Need Bleaching?
When a wig is made, every single hair strand is hand-knotted into the lace. At the base of each knot, there is a tiny dark dot — the tied end of the hair. On unbleached lace, these dots are visible as dark speckles on the lace, making it obvious that you are wearing a wig, even with perfect blending.
Bleaching the knots lightens these dark dots to match the lace color, making the scalp simulation seamless and undetectable. It is the single most effective technique for making a wig look like your real hairline.
Important: Many Hair Aura units come pre-bleached. Check your wig before doing this — if the knots already look light and natural, do not bleach them again.
What You Need
- Bleach powder (Sally Beauty or similar, not household bleach)
- Developer — 20 or 30 volume (20 vol is safer; 30 vol works faster but risks damage)
- Small mixing bowl and brush
- Aluminium foil
- Wig head / foam mannequin head
- Plastic wrap / cling film
- Timer
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Gloves
Step 1: Secure the Wig on a Mannequin Head
Pin the wig onto a foam head, hair-side down, so the lace is facing up and accessible. The hair should be folded away from the lace — you are only bleaching the underside of the lace (the knot side), not the hair itself.
This is critical: if bleach touches the hair shafts, it will lighten them and cause damage. Protect the hair by folding it away and placing a sheet of aluminium foil between the lace and the hair.
Step 2: Mix the Bleach
Mix bleach powder with 20 volume developer in a 1:2 ratio (1 part powder, 2 parts developer) until you get a smooth, yogurt-like consistency. Do not make it too runny — you want control.
Step 3: Apply to the Lace
Using your brush, apply the bleach mixture to the lace side of the wig. Cover all knotted areas evenly but do not saturate. You want enough bleach to cover the knots — not so much that it seeps through to the hair.
Once applied, cover loosely with plastic wrap to create light heat and prevent the bleach from drying out.
Step 4: Check Every 5–10 Minutes
This is the most important step. Do NOT set a timer for 30 minutes and walk away. Start checking at the 10-minute mark. You are looking for the knots to turn from dark brown/black to a golden honey colour — NOT white or yellow-white.
- Golden/honey coloured knots = stop now, this is perfect
- Dark knots after 30 minutes = apply for 10 more minutes and check again
- White or very pale yellow = over-bleached — the hair will be weak at the roots
Total processing time is usually 15–35 minutes depending on the developer strength and hair density.
Step 5: Rinse Thoroughly
Once the knots reach golden colour, rinse the lace immediately and thoroughly under lukewarm water. Shampoo gently to remove all bleach residue — any bleach left in the lace will continue processing and damage the hair.
Follow with a deep conditioner on the hair (avoid the lace itself) and let it sit for 5 minutes before rinsing.
Step 6: Allow to Fully Dry Before Installing
Let the wig air dry completely on the mannequin head before installing. Bleached lace is temporarily more fragile when wet. Installing while damp can cause the lace to stretch or tear along the knot lines.
Mistakes That Ruin Wigs
- Using household bleach — this destroys the hair. Always use hair bleach powder with developer
- Walking away for too long — over-bleached knots mean hair that sheds heavily from day one
- Bleaching through to the hair — always use foil to protect the hair side
- Skipping conditioner after — bleach is harsh; conditioning restores moisture and reduces breakage
- Bleaching pre-bleached units — always check if your wig already has bleached knots before starting
Do You Have to Bleach Knots?
No — but it makes a significant visual difference. An unbleached wig can still look natural with good lace tinting and concealer, but bleached knots remove the need for heavy concealing and look more natural in all lighting conditions including Ghana's bright outdoor light.
All Hair Aura premium wigs are available pre-plucked. Many of our HD lace units have knots that are already light enough to skip the bleaching step entirely — ideal for those who prefer a simple install.
