Raw Hair vs Processed Hair: What's the Difference and Which Should You Buy?

Why Does Raw Hair Cost So Much More?

You have probably noticed that some wigs are labelled "Raw Vietnamese" or "Raw Cambodian" and priced significantly higher than standard human hair wigs. The price difference is real — but so is the quality gap. This guide explains exactly what you are paying for, and whether it is worth it for you.

What is Raw Hair?

Raw hair is human hair collected directly from a single donor, in its completely natural state. It has never been chemically treated, steam-processed, or altered in any way. The cuticles are fully intact and all aligned in the same direction (called "cuticle-aligned" hair).

Key characteristics of raw hair:

  • Collected from one donor — all strands are naturally matching
  • Cuticles intact and aligned — the hair behaves naturally and resists tangling
  • Natural texture — it may have slight wave or curl from the donor's natural hair
  • Can be colored, bleached, and heat-styled repeatedly without breaking down
  • Lasts 3–5+ years with proper care

What is Processed Hair?

Processed hair (also called "remy hair" or "virgin hair" depending on the grade) has been chemically treated. Most commonly, the cuticles are removed using an acid bath and then the hair is coated with silicone to make it feel smooth and shiny. It can come from multiple donors.

Key characteristics of processed hair:

  • May come from multiple donors — blended and treated to look uniform
  • Silicone coating wears off after 3–8 washes, sometimes revealing rough, tangled hair underneath
  • Less durable for bleaching or repeated heat styling
  • More affordable upfront
  • Lifespan typically 6–18 months

The True Cost Comparison

Here is where many buyers get it wrong. A processed wig at GH₵600 that lasts 12 months costs GH₵600/year. A raw hair wig at GH₵1,800 that lasts 4 years costs GH₵450/year — and looks better the entire time.

If you are buying a wig you will wear regularly, raw hair is often the more economical choice over a 2–3 year horizon.

Which Should You Buy?

Buy processed/standard human hair if:

  • This is your first wig and you are still learning your preferences
  • You want a specific fashion color (bright red, blonde, etc.) already done
  • Your budget is under GH₵800
  • You plan to rotate between many different styles

Buy raw hair if:

  • You have one or two go-to styles and want them to last
  • You color or bleach your wigs
  • You use heat tools frequently
  • You want the most natural look and feel possible
  • You are willing to invest in a unit that will grow with you

What Regions Produce the Best Raw Hair?

The most popular raw hair origins sold in Ghana are:

  • Raw Vietnamese hair — naturally straight to wavy, very dense, excellent for bone straight and body wave styles. The most popular choice at Hair Aura.
  • Raw Cambodian hair — naturally wavy texture, thicker strand diameter, great body and volume.
  • Raw Indian hair — naturally fine, silky texture, excellent for sleek straight styles.
